PUBLICATION REQUIREMENT
- Clerk posts notice of the name change petition for 10 days before the hearing
- Clerk may waive publication if you have a reasonable fear of domestic violence, stalking, or sexual assault — bring documentation
- After 10-day publication, court schedules your hearing
- You do not need an attorney to file this petition
WHAT TO BRING TO THE HEARING
- Valid government-issued photo ID
- Copy of your filed petition
- Proof of NC residency (utility bill, lease, etc.)
- After approval, ask for certified copies of the order (fee per copy)
AFTER THE COURT ORDER
- Update Social Security card FIRST (SSA.gov — free, bring certified order)
- Then update NC Driver's License (DMV — bring updated SS card + certified order)
- Then update Passport (form DS-5504 if within 1 year; DS-82 otherwise)
- Notify financial institutions, employer, voter registration
- Generate the SP-87 Order → to bring to your hearing
