Clerk posts notice of the name change petition for 10 days before the hearing
Clerk may waive publication if you have a reasonable fear of domestic violence, stalking, or sexual assault — bring documentation
After 10-day publication, court schedules your hearing
You do not need an attorney to file this petition

Valid government-issued photo ID
Copy of your filed petition
Proof of NC residency (utility bill, lease, etc.)
After approval, ask for certified copies of the order (fee per copy)

AFTER THE COURT ORDER

Update Social Security card FIRST (SSA.gov — free, bring certified order)
Then update NC Driver's License (DMV — bring updated SS card + certified order)
