CRITICAL DEADLINES
- 30 days from entry of judgment to file Notice of Appeal (G.S. 1-279.1)
- District → Superior: de novo review in Superior Court
- Superior → Court of Appeals: 30 days from entry of final judgment
- Interlocutory appeal: must assert affects substantial right
- File in the trial court — not the appellate court
- Serve opposing counsel simultaneously with filing
APPEAL ROUTES (CIVIL)
- District Court → Superior Court: trial de novo (all issues retried)
- Superior Court → Court of Appeals: record review (no new trial)
- Superior Court → Supreme Court: only for death penalty or certain constitutional issues
- District Court → Court of Appeals: only for specific magistrate matters
